My husband hates primroses because he says that their leaves look like weeds; are they actually weeds?? I like the flowers, but then I also like dandelions. :)
Well, Margaret, your husband's view is the majority view, but it all depends on how you define "weed." The cliche is that a weed is just a plant that's growing where you don't want it to grow. Some say a weed is simply an ugly plant. But then you get into the definition of "ugly." I love daffodil flowers but I think the green part of the plant is hideous. The flower -- a single flower for each plant -- blooms for several days, not even a week, and then all those green stalks spend weeks, months even, turning brown and ratty. On the other hand, a single evening primrose blooms many times during the spring and summer, more if you pinch back dying flowers, and it stays short and green most of the summer. I'm for the underdog weeds! If I lived here alone I might consider letting dandelions take over my yard. Wouldn't that be beautiful?! Yellow flowers all spring and summer, in a beautiful blanket over my lawn. And the honey bees would be in heaven.
